The Baptist College & Seminary of Washington (BCSW) was founded in 1982 to provide training for laymen in various Church ministries. Reverend Hyun Chul Kim was appointed to organize and supervise the committee, as well as develop and implement the program.

In September, 1982, Dr. Roy Godwin was appointed the first president of the institution which opened its doors to the public in Washington D.C. at the Wisconsin Avenue Baptist Church.

In the spring of 1984 Dr. David H. Kim was appointed the second president. The BCSW campus was relocated to the Columbia Baptist Church in Falls Church in May, 1984.

In November, 1984, the Virginia State Board of Higher Education recognized BCSW as a licensed educational institution as well as a non-profit organization.

The Council of Higher Education of the Commonwealth of Virginia authorized the BCSW to grant religious degrees such as Associate of Divinity, Bachelor of Theology, Master of Religious Education, Master of Divinity, and Doctor of Ministry.

In March, 1993, the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) granted BSWS the privilege to issue I-20 forms to qualified international students.

In May, 1997, Dr. David Kim succeeded him as the third president of BCSW. The BCSW began the ESL program and it also started to build up the necessary funds to buy its own building.

In May, 2000, Dr. Won He Lee was appointed the interim president and in September of that year, BCSW underwent an administrative reorganization.

In May, 2002, Dr. Johng Ook Lee became the fourth president of the BCSW. In November, 2003, the campus was relocated to Annandale, VA. In February, 2004, the name was changed to Washington Baptist College & Seminary (WBCS).

In June, 2004, WBCS joined ATS (the Association of Theological Schools in the United States and Canada) as an associate member, which indicates that WBCS is currently working toward becoming an accredited member of ATS.

In July, 2004, SCHEV (the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia) authorized WBCS to grant BA, BS, MA, MRE, MDiv, ThM, DMin, and Ph.D. degrees. (Ph.D. is currently planned to be offered later).

On November 5, 2004, WBCS purchased the present building at 4300 Evergreen Lane, Annandale, VA 22003.

Shortly there after Washington Baptist College & Seminary changed its name to Washington Baptist University, on August, 2006, Dr. Jacob Suk-Tae Shin became the fifth president of the Washington Baptist University
